In the past the Dutch ministry of Water started an initiative for monitoring the signal lights on bridges and other infrastructural elements.

By monitoring the operational functionality of the signal lights malfunction situations were solved quickly without losing time for tracking the errors. At first the signal lights were regular light bulbs. The amount of current consumed by the lights indicated its operational status (ok or fail). The monitored current is checked by the relay and during an error a signal was transmitted to the control panel of the bridge.

Later on more and more led signal lights were used on site. This large replacement process was also initiated by the Dutch Ministry of water.
